MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Encouraged by many of its members, Seed Central has set up a mentorship program to connect UC Davis students with professionals in the seed and ag-biotech industry.

We started small but we will learn along the way and grow the program (incl. beyond UC Davis) as we figure out how to do it well, so all parties benefit fully.

The program is open to undergraduates, graduates and post-docs.

In industry, we are looking for individuals who are very motivated to become mentors and are willing to:
a) learn how to be a good mentor (we offer guidance) and
b) provide feedback so we keep improving the program.

We certainly would like to have researchers in the mix, but also people from other functional areas.

We provide guidance to mentors and mentees, and we follow each pair through their mentorship period.

We offer two kinds of mentorship:

  • long-term mentorship, i.e. accompanying the student during undergraduate/graduate years, through graduation, and possibly a bit beyond, with contacts 3 or 4 times a year, and

  • short-term mentorship, e.g. frequent communication between mentor and mentee during the last 6 to 12 months before graduation.

We do our best to pair “smartly”, as we tried to do with industry and student panelists for our roundtables in January 2016 and March 2017: we asked the students about their career plans and aspirations, and matched them accordingly based on the industry peoples’ own profiles.

Mentors do not necessarily need to be located near Davis.

If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, please contact François Korn at: fkorn@seedcentral.org
