Women in Biotech roundtable

Building on the Forbes magazine article ranking UC Davis as the #1 school for women in STEM, we propose a panel discussion and networking event to convene university and industry leaders and students in a conversation about working in biotechnology.
The goal of this event is to bring together women currently working in the biotechnology industry, including UC Davis alums, with UC Davis faculty, staff, students and postdoctoral scholars seeking to better understand opportunities and challenges to working in the agricultural, medical and industrial biotechnology sector.
This event is a spin-off of the successful and well attended Seed Central event focused on Women in the Seed Industry in January 2016.

Dr. McKay's seeks an understanding of the genetic basis of traits involved in adaptation to particular stresses (e.g. drought) for both applied (crop breeding, conservation, invasive species) and theoretical questions in ecology and evolution. Are adaptations due to: many genetic changes or only a few? New mutations or older alleles that persist at some frequency throughout the species range and history?
Director of Genetics, New West Genetics
Building on its success in breeding plants like rice and canola, New West Genetics is using its proprietary methods and knowledgebase to improve the genetics and growing processes of Cannabis sativa, initially starting with hemp.

  Special Seed Central Day
at the

The 12th Triennial Conference
of the International Society for Seed Science (ISSS)

will take place in Monterey, California on September 10-14, 2017.

September 14 being the 2nd Thursday of the month, we decided to move our monthly networking to where all the seed professionals will be that day.
We also thought it would be great to bring to the conference a good number of students from UC Davis, Woodland Community College, Sacramento City College, Hartnell College, California State University-Monterey Bay, Fresno State and Cal-Poly.
To best fit in the ISSS Conference program, we exceptionally moved our event to Wednesday, September 13, 2017 with the following program:

MORNING

9:30 – 12:00    Students visit two seed companies in the Salinas area:
Enza Zaden and Sakata Seed America.

AFTERNOON & EVENING
Students in Salinas with ISSS delegates and “Seed Central regulars”

12:30 – 2:00     Lunch
  2:00 – 4:00     Career fair & trade show
  4:00 – 5:30     Networking

Topic: The SmartFarm project

SmartFarm will take an integrated systems approach to develop superior plants, smart machines, more efficient farming methods for crops and animals alike, and a highly trained workforce that together will provide a path toward food security in the year 2050 and beyond. To achieve progress that is meaningful to farmers, ranchers and the public at large, plant and animal science research must be conducted at a sufficient scale and under actual farming conditions in addition to the laboratory. SmartFarm will work to develop technological, knowledge-based solutions that allow an intimate understanding of plants and animals at the individual level in order to create novel highly intensive food production systems for urban environments and optimize on-farm management and resource utilization, and maximize productivity in harmony with our diverse, natural environment.
